If anything hurts, you feel uncomfortable, need some space, or would like to stop at any time during training, repeatedly tap your partner three or four times with your hand (on their body is best so they can feel it). This immediately signals your training partner to stop the technique and reduce pressure.
If your arms are trapped, use your voice or legs to tap.
Instructors on the tatami are always watching closely and are there to assist at all times.

Remember that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when practised in an academy under instruction, is designed to be trained safely without serious injury. These rules help keep you and your training partners safe and healthy.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu - The Gracie family learned from Japanese practitioners of Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Over many years, they made significant modifications to the art and named it after their family. They taught many students, some of whom later went on to teach others.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - As the art spread beyond the Gracie family and Gracie academies, it became widely known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Today, BJJ is the most commonly used name worldwide.
The Difference - Gracie Jiu Jitsu often includes additional elements such as self-defence, weapon awareness, and fight training, which are less commonly emphasised in sport-focused BJJ.
That said, we respect and enjoy all styles of grappling and martial arts — including BJJ, GJJ, Submission Grappling, MMA, and beyond.
Following these guidelines helps ensure you are the best training partner you can be.
