Anyone is more then welcome come and watch a Gracie Jiu Jitsu class in action! Some people prefer to watch a class first then decide if it’s the best for them. We can work around you to make an appropriate time.

New students attending Gi classes are provided with a rental uniform for their first class. New students attending NoGi classes should wear their own activewear.

Thereafter, training gear for both Gi and NoGi classes can be purchased from us.

Please contact us prior to your first class or your child’s first class. We will send you a link to complete our waiver, which can also be found via our Instagram bio and website.

Please come to class, or send your child to class, wearing thongs/slides and bring a water bottle.

Arriving 10–15 minutes prior to class is always encouraged. We also recommend avoiding large meals within 30 minutes before training.

If anything hurts, you feel uncomfortable, need some space, or would like to stop at any time during training, repeatedly tap your partner three or four times with your hand (on their body is best so they can feel it). This immediately signals your training partner to stop the technique and reduce pressure.

If your arms are trapped, use your voice or legs to tap.

Instructors on the tatami are always watching closely and are there to assist at all times.

Training should be challenging, enjoyable, and safe for everyone involved.

Basic Rules (some are very obvious)

No eye gouging or hair pulling.
No twisting or grabbing fingers.
No slamming (picking someone up and dropping them).
No neck cranks.

Remember that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, when practised in an academy under instruction, is designed to be trained safely without serious injury. These rules help keep you and your training partners safe and healthy.

Gracie Jiu Jitsu - The Gracie family learned from Japanese practitioners of Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. Over many years, they made significant modifications to the art and named it after their family. They taught many students, some of whom later went on to teach others.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - As the art spread beyond the Gracie family and Gracie academies, it became widely known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Today, BJJ is the most commonly used name worldwide.

The Difference - Gracie Jiu Jitsu often includes additional elements such as self-defence, weapon awareness, and fight training, which are less commonly emphasised in sport-focused BJJ.

That said, we respect and enjoy all styles of grappling and martial arts — including BJJ, GJJ, Submission Grappling, MMA, and beyond.

Following these guidelines helps ensure you are the best training partner you can be.

  1. Shake hands and greet all students and instructors once you enter the dojo.
  2. Classes begin and end with a formal bow to the instructor and then to the picture of Grandmaster Helio Gracie, with students lined up in descending grade order.
  3. Keep fingernails and toenails short and clean for everyone’s safety.
  4. Your belt represents your progress — keep it on.
  5. Remove all metal objects, jewellery, piercings, necklaces, and similar items before training.
  6. No shoes, food, or drink on the tatami.
  7. Mobile phones should be kept on silent in the dojo area.
  8. Please avoid talking while techniques are being taught.
  9. Be respectful at all times.
  10. Shower before class if needed.
  11. Shoes/slides should be worn anytime you are not on the tatami.
  12. Wash your uniform after every class.
  13. Always wear a clean uniform to training.
  14. Look after yourself, look after your training partners, and have fun.
